In this episode of Bloomberg Expert Access, a series spotlighting the crucial work and industry impact of our research teams, Tara Narayanan, North American Regional Trends Specialist at BloombergNEF, discusses what steps the US needs to take to meet its decarbonization goals by 2050 and the role of data centers in the growing demand for energy.
“It is a bit funny to say that the US is falling behind because two years ago the Inflation Reduction Act was passed,” she says. “That’s a very generous set of subsidies, entirely intended to kick start this decarbonization effort, and to keep a lot more clean energy technologies cost-competitive and in play, and to see more adoption. What’s ended up happening, though, is that even with a lot of these subsidies, the new technology that needs to scale and ramp up very quickly in order to decarbonize the sectors, are seeing no transition whatsoever, [and] are still expensive. As long as we wait for the lowest cost economics to play out, its going to take time for those to break through.”
